Hyperpigmentation: Causes & Treatment

Hyperpigmentation, also known as dark spots, age spots or sun spots, can be a frustrating challenge. We asked Kirsty to explain what it is, how to prevent it and how to treat it.

What causes hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation can show as darker patches on the skin and all skin types can be affected explains Kirsty. The patches are caused by an excess of melanin (the natural pigments produced in our cells responsible for skin and hair colour).

But why does our skin sometimes produce too much melanin which shows as hyperpigmentation?

Broadly there are three main causes as Kirsty explains:

#1. Changes in hormone levels

Pregnancy, hormone therapies and changing birth control can cause hyperpigmentation which can be temporary.

#2. Too much sun exposure

When exposed to harmful UV rays (including sunbeds) our skin produces melanin to protect itself.

#3. Post inflammation

Hyperpigmentation can appear after inflammation or injury to the skin. Acne, allergic reactions, and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis can cause dark patches as the damaged skin tries to heal itself. As it heals, it produces melanin, and often produces more than is needed.

Be health aware…
Sometimes, hyperpigmentation can be caused by an underlying health condition. If you are concerned, always see your GP.

“Wearing a SPF 30+ (Sun Protection Factor) daily to protect the skin from harmful UV rays is crucial for fighting pigmentation, even on cloudy days or if you’re indoors sitting by a window as rays do go through glass. And remember darker skin-tones are just as prone to sun damage as their lighter counterparts.”

Preventing hyperpigmentation
“There is no guaranteed way to avoid hyperpigmentation altogether, but one of the most vital steps you can take is to protect your skin from those damaging sunrays” says Kirsty.
